Elizabeth Davis

Status: looking for family!

Elizabeth Davis is the second eldest child born to Hannah Slingluff and Charles Davis, farmers from Montgomery County, PA whose family photos were found at Blue Peacock Antiques in Winchester, VA.

Elizabeth was born in 1867 in Lower Providence Township and married William Brooks in 1898 - a man 17 years her senior, who already had a 10 year old daughter, Glena, and a 25 year old son, John. Elizabeth was 31 at the time of their marriage - meaning her new husband’s son was old enough to be Elizabeth’s own husband!

In 1901 they had a child of their own: Charles. However, Charles does not appear in the 1910 nor 1920 census, indicating he likely died as a young child.

William died in 1922 at the age of 70, leaving Elizabeth a widow at just 49 years old. She never remarried, and later in life moved in with her sister Sarah Ellen and Sarah’s husband, Henry. Elizabeth died in 1942 in Norristown, and is buried at Green Tree Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Oaks, PA. Interestingly, her headstone reads ‘Mother’, leaving me to believe her stepchildren, Glena and John, who are named in her obituary, loved Elizabeth as a mother and put her to rest as such.
